Why Philanthropy Matters

Everywhere we look around the College we see evidence of the generosity of donors, enabling excellence in education. Emmanuel students are the beneficiaries of philanthropy from current parents, alumni, staff, past families and friends. We are exceptionally grateful to those who have given generously to provide the educational opportunities, buildings and facilities that our students currently enjoy today. Most importantly, all donations, large and small, are valued by the College.

Philanthropy is at the heart of Emmanuel College’s history, success and values. Our donors choose to give to Emmanuel College because they know their actions transform lives and we are so grateful for the Emmanuel community’s ongoing generosity.

Our students take the lessons and values learned at Emmanuel College and go on to make meaningful contributions to society. Emmanuel alumni are contributing knowledge, ideas and support across all areas of society, using their talents for the betterment of others through business, law and politics, the arts, medicine, science and technology, sport and more.

A gift to the Emmanuel College Foundation helps the next generation of students to experience success. You have the opportunity of supporting the next chapter of Emmanuel’s journey and having a transformative impact on the lives of the young people who undertake their secondary education at Emmanuel College.

The Emmanuel College Foundation Board actively encourages philanthropy to help preserve, develop and improve the standards, facilities and wellbeing of the college.

I see the Foundation playing a role in supporting regionally located people and creating opportunities for them the same as I experienced

A little bit about the Foundation……..

Our Board

Three of our current Board members, Eric Howard AM, Steve Callaghan and Peter Carroll have been with the Foundation since its inception and we would like to recognise and applaud these Directors for their continued service.

We also welcome our new Chair, Glenys Phillpot OAM and Director, Paul Shanley who began their journey with us in February this year and we are so appreciative of their time and commitment to the college.

Let’s dig a little deeper and understand their background and the skills they bring to the table and why the Foundation Directors are committed to Emmanuel College:

Eric Howard was a CBC Alumni of the Class of 1965 and school captain from 1964-65. He is the eldest of seven children of Leo and Teresa Howard. Eric is married to Mary (Murnane) a former student of St Ann’s and currently resides in Melbourne.

Eric has a Bachelor of Science (Civil Engineering) from Melbourne University and was appointed an Order of Australia for service to road transport safety professional associations and community.

Eric says “My secondary schooling at CBC was an enjoyable and comprehensive preparation for life. My involvement now with the Foundation is motivated by the opportunity to give some economic support to better enable certain students in the Warrnambool district to fully complete their secondary education at Emmanuel College.

This will provide these young people, particularly those from financially disadvantaged families, with access to improved options for their futures and further encourage them to become the best they can be, based on the knowledge and skills they will develop and the values they will absorb alongside their fellow students”.

Peter Carroll is a CBC Alumni of the Class of 1978. He is the second eldest of six children of John and Mary Carroll and is married to Joanne (Cashill) who all attended CBC and St Ann’s. Peter also resides in Melbourne.

Peter has a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) from Deakin University and is a partner at Fordham, a specialist section of Perpetual. Peter specialises in accounting, tax, superannuation, strategy, planning and operational performance matters for private businesses, their owners, and high net worth individuals. Peter is a director of various companies assisting with their corporate governance requirements.

Peter says “I am motivated to be a Board Director knowing I am making a difference to student’s education options. I am committed to Emmanuel College as my family has a long and strong connection with my father, uncle, brothers and sisters also being graduates”.

“Emmanuel College gave me a start, the opportunity to attend university and ultimately a career in financial services. I see the Foundation playing a role in supporting regionally located people and creating opportunities for them the same as I experienced”.

Stephen Callaghan is a CBC Alumni, Class of 1986. He has a family of three sisters who attended St. Ann’s or Emmanuel College and his father Brian attended CBC. His wife Jenny (Mugavin) attended St Ann’s and is currently a teacher at the College.

Steve earned a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) at Deakin University where he then worked over the next six years in Melbourne at KPMG, TAC Insurance and Preston Motors. For the past 25 years, Steve has worked in the family business, Callaghan Motors, becoming Dealer Principal in 2004. In 2017 he moved the dealership to a new state of the art facility with five brands and two supporting businesses.

Steve says “I am committed to this role as a Director of the Foundation due to my family’s long and beneficial relationship with the College. The teachers at CBC encouraged me to do my best but they also encouraged me to participate in learnings that were of an interest to me. This support assisted me to focus on deriving the best benefits from my education.

There was never any doubt in Jenny and my mind about where I wanted our kids to go to school. I wanted them to have the same experiences and opportunities I had, so I enrolled them at Emmanuel College. They’re as happy there as I was. As a parent, that’s the most important thing for me.”

Glenys Phillpot OAM was a Warrnambool City Councillor for thirteen years, including four terms as Mayor. She was Chair of the Art Gallery Advisory Committee and served as a member of the Deakin University Council for four years. Glenys is a Director of Peters Project Foundation, Chair of the Lookout Residential Rehabilitation Steering Committee and has been on the Western Region Alcohol and other Drugs (WRAD) Committee of Management since 1999.

Glenys worked in financial planning and superannuation at Sinclair Wilson for 20 years and she and her husband Bill have five children and 12 grandchildren.

“I am pleased to be assisting Emmanuel College through the College Foundation to achieve its goal of transforming the school over the next decade, to better serve all the young people of our community. The work that is being done is inspiring, aspirational and will lead to a better and more fulfilling future for so many.

In 2023 we have a grandchild starting the Emmanuel journey, with more to follow. I want the best opportunities and challenges for them, and the many other young people who are the informed future of our community”.

Paul Shanley was in the CBC HSC class of 1981. He is the son of Gerald and Helen Shanley who both still reside in Warrnambool.

Paul is a chartered accountant whose career has spanned various parts of the financial services sector. He is currently CEO of Impact Investing Group and is based in Melbourne.

Paul says “ I am excited to join the Board of the Foundation. The Foundation has been set up to provide broad access to Warrnambool and district families to a quality education. CBC gave me my start in life and now it is my turn to make a contribution so that others can enjoy these opportunities also”.

We thank them for their dedication to the college and volunteering in such an important capacity to support our community.

Our Executive

Working alongside the Board is newly appointed Executive Officer, Alison Byrne, who joined the College in term 3 2021. Alison has nearly 30 years’ experience in the not-for-profit space working with organisations in a variety of sectors guiding major gift programs, capital campaigns, corporate partnerships, establishing bequest programs and bespoke appeals. With practical experience in rural, remote and metropolitan communities she has transitioned comfortably and effectively to South West Victoria having lived and worked in both. She is passionate about growing giving and excited to be engaging with the community at Emmanuel College.

Alison understands the not-for-profit sector and she knows that philanthropy is the catalyst that transforms ideas into action, ultimately resulting in impactful solutions for the communities they serve.

Alison says “for us here at Emmanuel College Warrnambool that means everything our college wants to accomplish tomorrow means we need to build on the great fundraising success we have enjoyed in the past. I am really looking forward to reaching out to our community and understanding the meaningful, unique and special connection you have with the College”.
