150 years! The incredible legacy that is today’s Emmanuel College began as a seed planted by the Sisters of Mercy at the request of Bishop Goold in 1872.

It’s interesting to think about what Warrnambool would have looked like in 1872 when it all began. While the small port known as Warrnambool had not yet reached the status of town, it was clearly a burgeoning place to be. Alongside the Sisters of Mercy founding the then borough’s first Catholic secondary school, was the running of Warrnambool’s first Grand Annual Steeplechase and the publishing of the first edition of the Warrnambool Standard.

These beginnings for our school have laid an incredible foundation, one we continue to uphold and grow further today. All past students, staff and families have added to this history over our 150 years, making it rich, diverse and worthy of commemoration. Emmanuel’s first history book will be published later this year, learn more about it and how you can get a copy here.

Another reason to celebrate is the growing freedom we are now enjoying post two years of rolling COVID lockdowns. Reconnect with your classmates by organising or going along to a class reunion or other alumni event. A list of current events on the calendar can be found here. Get in touch if you would like to add another event to this calendar.

While lockdowns saw the continued cancellation of most events in the last half of 2021, we did have a couple of wins. Our Class of 2021 were able to celebrate their graduation together with their families in the Emmanuel Centre, where they were addressed by their very first set of College Captains - Isabella Mahoney-O’Donnell and Joey Brady (Class of 2016). Isabella and Joey’s words were heartfelt and inspirational, leading our newest alumni into the future. We sincerely thank them both for their wonderful contribution.

We were also able to stage a scaled back version of our Evening of Inspiration. It was wonderful to be able to pay tribute to the amazing alumni inducted and recognised. Read more about the event here.

We are pleased to present this edition of the Emmanuel College Connection and as always encourage you to share stories of your classmates with us and stay in touch.

Enjoy,

. . . The point is that we recognise the role of this harbour and appreciate what we learn from its environment, but in order to grow and move forward, we have to be willing to untie the ropes . . .
