NATHAN SOBEY

Class of 2008

Each Olympic Games produces a steady stream of iconic moments. Moments that celebrate grit, unity, success and loss, and Tokyo’s “2020” has been no different. Perhaps for Australians, one of the most treasured moments will prove to be the first ever medalling of the Australian men’s basketball team – the Boomers. The moment, which even reduced basket-balling stalwart Andrew Gaze to tears, saw 64 years of Boomers development get them on the podium and share a “Rose Gold” moment.

Part of this tight-knit Boomers team, who defeated Slovenia to score the bronze medal with a 107-93 win, was our own Nathan Sobey of the Class of 2008.

While already grateful for the opportunity to play again with the Boomers, the medal win took Nathan to a new high. In an interview with the NBL, Nathan shared, “Once you put that jersey on, it means something special. It’s not just the group that was involved in this campaign, but over the previous years. They’ve all set the standard for what it actually means to wear that jersey. A piece of them is in part of that medal.”

While on the podium, Nathan’s thoughts were with his family and his team mates. Congratulations Nathan!

SR ADELE HOWARD RSM

CLASS OF 1966

A wholehearted congratulations to Sr Adele on her recent Order of Australia Medal.

Adele was recognised for her commitment to developing a clearer understanding of the crisis of climate change and our need to take action to reverse the damage of global warming, as inspired by Pope Francis’ message in Laudato Si.

“It is so generous of the people who took the time to put me forward, knowing that it is an acknowledgement of the work of the church community across Australia, and so for that I am grateful.” Sr Adele says.
