Sr Mary Dennett rsm

7/12/1938 – 23/10/2022

The Emmanuel College community remembers the life of past Principal Sr Mary Dennett rsm.

Originally from Brunswick, Mary remained closely connected to her family throughout her life of service as a Mercy Sister, with Mary identifying them as the source of her faith and positivity. 2022 was the 63rd year of Mary’s religious profession.

A passionate educator, Mary was a dynamic teacher, College Principal and Retreat Leader, following the call of Mercy to where it was needed most. She was most in her element teaching Maths and Science. Mary first joined our College community in 1986-1987 where she served as Deputy Principal and Religion Coordinator at St Ann’s College.

Mary returned in 1994-1995, this time as Principal of Emmanuel College. Mary was the second principal of Emmanuel, continuing the work of Sr Rose-Marie Glennen. During her time here, Mary made a significant contribution to the ongoing development of college life. Like her approach to all her work, she is remembered for her great enthusiasm, with a particular eagerness to deepen the level of professionalism in all aspects of Catholic Education. Mary was very well admired, being appreciated for the sincere concern she consistently gave for the wellbeing of staff, students, and families.

In amongst her teaching appointments, Mary took opportunities as they arose to continue further study. Going as far afield as New Jersey, USA, she took a keen and early interest in the connection between ecology and spirituality.

On her retirement from teaching, Mary spread her wings and took on new opportunities. This led to her working as a volunteer at the Mercy International Centre in Dublin where she uncovered an Australian connection with the family of Catherine McAuley. Mary completed extensive research, documenting the story of Catherine’s nephew, Willie McAuley, and uncovered many other family links along the way.

Mary will also be remembered for her support of women and children escaping family violence.

Mary passed away at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. We pray for her family, her friends, and the Sisters of Mercy who cared for Mary during her illness.
