Scholarship Success

In our last edition of the Emmanuel College Connection, Peter Morgan shared with you the success of our Transforming Lives Appeal campaign for our Scholarship Program. This has translated into thirteen new scholarships being awarded for 2023 across all year levels.

We are incredibly grateful to:

  • The Gall Family Foundation
  • The Thomas O’Toole Foundation
  • The A.L Lane Foundation
  • The Archie & Hilda Graham Foundation
  • The Ern Hartley Foundation

It has been a delight to receive some lovely letters to these Foundations from the recipients.

I would like to thank you for giving me this generous scholarship, some of my future goals aren’t quite clear, but I guess time will tell. But I thank you for such a generous donation which allows me to attend the best school in Warrnambool, I will definitely try my best at school and participate in all subjects.

Thank you for your very generous donation towards my schooling and education for 2023. Starting at Emmanuel last year, I really enjoyed settling into a new school. Thank you again for your generosity and kind heart.

Awards Night Support

The college engages a business called RTG to manage its Information and Communication Technology requirements at the college. Generously they have committed three years of funding in support of the Emmanuel Awards Night. All of our recipients of this years scholarships were awarded at this event.

Thank you for contributing to my school fees in 2023. This has helped out my mum a lot and we are both very grateful for your donation. This will help me with my education at Emmanuel College. My mum let me go to Emmanuel College so that I could take every opportunity to be my best . . . Making the most of my education is really important for me.

New to the Foundation

The Foundation is delighted to welcome Inala Cooper to our board, joining us in February 2023. Inala is one of the ‘Last of the Last’ commencing at St Ann’s in its final year, then graduating from Emmanuel College in the Class of 1995 in which she served as a prefect.

Inala then completed her Bachelor of Arts (Drama and Contemporary Dance) at Deakin, and a Master of Human Rights Law at Monash.

Currently Inala is the Director of Murrup Barak, the Melbourne Institute for Indigenous Development at University of Melbourne, and has worked 13 years in the higher education sector in the area of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander success. She served as the President of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Higher Education Consortium (NATSIHEC) in 2022 and is now embarking on her PhD in the area of Indigenous identity and human rights.

Inala is a regular contributor on ABC’s News Breakfast and The Drum and is also a Director on the board of State Library Victoria, and the Adam Briggs Foundation.

Inala says “I loved school and my time at St Ann’s and Emmanuel set the foundation for my academic success. Everyone deserves to participate at school in an equitable way without worry or stress. Young people deserve time and space to create, explore, ask questions, and reach their potential. Our work now is to open the doors wider and ensure all students feel that they belong here.”

I would first like to start off by saying thank you very much for giving me this opportunity; I was so happy when I heard that I had been given the scholarship. In the future, I hope to become an equine veterinarian when I graduate from school.

Investment Committee

In recognition of its fiduciary responsibility, the Board of Directors of the Foundation has over the past year reached one of its pivotal goals, to establish an Investment Committee and strategy to manage contributions to the Foundation with the utmost integrity.

The Investment Committee was established in 2022 including Board Director Paul Shanley, as Chair of this committee and Director Peter Carroll, plus Stephen Kerr, Emmanuel Business Manager. With defined Terms of Reference approved by the Board, the committee sought the support of a finance advisor and after a prudent interview process, John Brereton from McLaren Hunt Financial Planning was appointed.

The Board now has an Investment Strategy in place. This involves investing the Foundation funds responsibly including an ethical overlay, which will maximise the community’s investment in the fund. As Paul Shanley said “Basically this will generate a sustainable, reliable income stream that will have the greatest impact for our Scholarship program in the long term”.

Firstly, I would like to say thank you for providing me with a financial scholarship for this year. I am honoured to have received this support to help assist my educational learning this year. In 2023, I am starting my VCE studies and I am going to ensure I try my very best to fulfil my goals. In the future, I would like to pursue further studies at university, most likely in the Health or Psychology area. With your scholarship, this is going to help me achieve my dreams.
