Br Frank O'Shea

Br Frank O'Shea

Class of 1971

Late last year we were congratulating Frank on a well-deserved retirement. Based in one of the largest slums in Nairobi in Kenya, Frank had been a long serving Director of the Ruben Centre, a hub of social services that provides quality education, healthcare, financial, and social services to children and families.

However, his retirement has been short-lived.

With his absence from the Centre quickly realised, Frank has been drawn back, bringing a wave of excitement among the students, staff, and other members of the Ruben community.

Frank’s passion and commitment to the mission of the Ruben Centre has been the driving force behind its success today. He has worked tirelessly to create a safe and supportive environment for families, providing them with many essential services that they would not otherwise have access to.

During Frank’s time as Director, his dedication and hard work have seen many new services delivered, along with countless lives transformed. So it is no surprise that his return to the role has been met with such enthusiasm.

Class of 1991

We continue to admire the work of Inspiring Alumni, Natalie in her recent appointment to the Loretto Sister’s Institute Leadership Team. Natalie is now the Australian and South-East Asian Province Institute Consultor for the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM) globally.

This new role for Natalie saw her relocated to the Vatican towards the end of 2022, where she now works closely with the other IBVM Consultors and members of the Institute Leadership Team. Their mission is to support the growth in faith and freedom of each person through IBVM’s ministries in education, social and ecological issues, pastoral care, health care, and arts and music.

As Natalie settles into life in Rome, she has already met with Australian Ambassador to Italy, Ms Margaret Twomey AM and the Ambassador to the Holy See, Ms Chiara Porro.

Previously, Natalie has served as a Sister, teaching and mentoring students and young teachers, primarily in East Timor, but also as far as Europe and South Africa. All the best Natalie!

As a player, Adrian played 176 games between 1986 and 1996, kicking 174 goals for the Blues. He has since gone on to be a long-serving Board member.

Bree Fox & Eliza Lane

Bree Fox & Eliza Lane

Class of 2022

A huge congratulations to the Class of 2022’s Bree Fox and Eliza Lane!

Bree and Eliza were both successful in gaining significant scholarships as they commence their tertiary studies this year, to assist them with study-related expenses from accommodation costs and travel, through to study materials and textbooks.

Thanks to the Port Fairy and District Community Bank, the scholarships see each recipient receive $10,000 over a two-year period. The scholarships are awarded to local students commencing a bachelor’s degree, who have demonstrated a commitment to leadership and their community.

“I’m so grateful for the scholarship, as it has given me more opportunities and relieved some stress surrounding university expenses.” Bree says.

Both girls are now keenly looking forward, as they settle into their studies. Bree has begun a Double Degree at the University of Tasmania - a Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science and a Bachelor of Laws.

“I’m thoroughly enjoying it,” Bree comments. “I hope to use my degree to undergo research projects locally and hopefully in Antarctica one day too. I’d also like to utilise my law degree to participate in Marine Law and Fisheries Management.”

Eliza has headed to Monash University in Clayton also to commence a double degree – a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Arts, where she hopes to major in legal studies and minor in psychology. Eliza’s enthusiasm for where this will lead is clear, as she has already turned her mind to her first round of placement happening next semester, and ultimately stepping into the role of a secondary school teacher on completion of her studies.

Eliza admits, “I have admired those teachers who were so obviously passionate about their subjects. I hope to one day be such a good teacher that I inspire someone to be a teacher or follow a profession in the subject I teach.”
