Landing in Australia in 2016, the Wohlers family instantly connected with the traditions and values of Emmanuel College.

Marty and Ayrton Wohlers had, up until Year 6, lived in America. Being halfway through their middle schooling when they made the move, choosing the right secondary school was a priority.

The family considered the three major schools in Warrnambool, and between Mum, Dad and the boys the decision was unanimous - Emmanuel College. “It was almost like a gut feeling. We all had that same feeling, so we thought we can’t all be wrong!” Jen laughs.

Their gut feeling proved to be spot-on. The boys settled in quickly, making friends right away and finding wonderful support from their teachers. “Mrs Grey was their homeroom teacher and she was outstanding.” Jen says. “The boys just came into their own at Emmanuel.”

Even for Jen herself, she was made to feel so welcome. College Librarian, Margaret Sinnott, encouraged Jen to join the Parent Book Club when they met at a school event. Jen joined and is still a part of it today. “I just love it so much! For her (Margaret), that gesture probably seemed really small, but for somebody who’s moving to a new community and doesn’t know anyone, it just made a huge difference.” Jen comments.

Perhaps an influence on Jen’s decision to enrol the boys, was feelings of familiarity, despite never seeing the school before. “When I first walked through these doors into the grounds, I thought - this is just like my old school!”

Jen attended St Mary’s College in Milwaukee which was founded and ran by the Sisters of St Francis of Assisi. As the family got to know Emmanuel more, the similarities continued to present themselves - particularly in the values. “I loved the old buildings, but what I did like about Emmanuel was that you could see that it was growing too.”

Listening to Jen, we learn that her school’s history almost parallels our own. St Mary’s had a brother school, Thomas More, which like our story of St Ann’s and CBC was located within easy walking distance of St Mary’s, and they would collaborate with each other. However instead of taking the path of amalgamation, Thomas More went co-educational on their own. This sadly resulted in St Mary’s enrolments dwindling to the point of closure in 1991.

“I went to a wonderful school, but it closed.” Jen explains. “I was in the last graduating class. So it’s very sad that it’s not there anymore, but it is very reassuring to know that this school has evolved and has adapted.”

“I think some of the things that have really allowed the boys to shine here are some of the extra curricular activities.” Jen says.

Both boys have been really involved in the Chess Club, and the Music Program. Marty plays the drums, and Ayrton plays the saxophone and guitar. Both boys performed in the recently staged Emmanuel Unmasked. (Read more on page 15)

When interviewing the boys, both highlight the Chess and Music Programs experiences as those that will last in their memories.

“I had the opportunity to go to Nationals with the school chess team and compete against some of the best chess players in Australia.” Marty says.

“Going to national level chess tournaments and meeting world famous chess players, Grand Masters, was always an incredible experience.” Aryton adds.

While both boys appreciate how their skills have improved through participation in the various school bands, they have particularly enjoyed being a part of the band, Boston 3. “We are really allowed to play any music we want and have help from Mr. Burgess-Metal. It’s amazing and always a very fun experience because we can really take it to the next level and be more independent.” Aryton says.

With the completion of Year 12 now only around the corner, the boys are thinking about their options. Marty is currently considering going on to study Commerce, and Aryton Paramedicine.

“I am very thankful for having the opportunity to attend Emmanuel and be a part of the Emmanuel family.” Marty says.
