Peggy O’Keeffe

We are sad to note the passing of Peggy O'Keefe, a member of our Inspiring Alumni and a student of St Ann’s Class of 1945.

Peggy, formerly of Wangoom, lived a very full life as an eminent Pianist, Bandleader, Television and Radio Presenter who has had a substantial international career.

During her time at St Ann’s, she was known for her singing voice and musical ability, so it was no surprise to see Peggy progress from her appearances as a pianist on radio broadcasts and accompaniment to artistes in cabarets in Australia, to the stages and studios of London and Glasgow.

Her career in the UK spanned some 30 years, where she played as part of jazz trios and quartets, for a long list of TV and radio music programs on the BBC and Scottish Television, and late in her career with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Gordon Cree Concert Orchestra.

Peggy lived her final years in Glasgow where she died aged 91.

Br Hugh Sharpe

Br Hugh Sharpe

Tasmanian born but spending some time in Perth, Br Hugh was one of the early Australian born brothers to serve in Tasmania after entering in 1943. He completed a Master of Educational Studies at the University of Tasmania in 1988. While the Christian Brothers' focus was generally on providing education, Br Hugh managed to also develop his natural ability in the arts and remained an active artist whose paintings hang in the Brothers' houses and other places around Australia including Emmanuel College.

He was also a prolific writer of poetry, drawing on his Tasmanian origins for inspiration. Br Hugh was a member of St Joseph's Parish and one of the last three residents in the Brothers community at Warrnambool when it closed in 2014.

Br Hugh Sharpe cfc passed away aged 90 in July at the Box Hill Hospital.
