Beverley (Class of 1956) and Bill Houlihan. “We were truly blessed to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary on 3rd September with our loving family and wonderful friends. We were married by Fr Madden at St Joseph’s Church, Warrnambool on 3rd September, 1966.”
Jim (Class of 1959) and Ellen Dwyer celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on 12th February being married at Newman College Chapel in 1966. The happy couple celebrated the occasion at a luncheon with all of their seven children and six grandchildren.
Virginia Moloney a member of the Class of 2008 and past sports trainee at the College, was this year’s female winner of the Melbourne marathon. Virginia slashed seven minutes off her previous best to finish with an impressive time of 2:34:27 – amazing! Well done Virginia!
Congratulations Leanne (Eales) Monk (Class of 1974), who competed at the World Masters Athletics Championships in October, claiming bronze in the Pole Vault and 200m, and gold in the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m. The championships, held this year in Perth, attracted around 4000 competitors from over 80 countries.
Racehorse Jameka, owned by Colin McKenna (Class of 1968) and trained by Ciaron Maher (Class of 1998) won this year’s illustrious Caulfield Cup. The win not only brought excitement and celebration to those in race-going circles, but also to the whole South West District.
Daniel O’Keefe (Class of 2006) was initially drafted to the Sydney Swans at pick 15 following his success playing for the Geelong Falcons. Bad luck with injuries prevented Daniel from playing for the Swans but his career in AFL continues with his recent appointment as coach of his old club, the Falcons. Congratulations Daniel.

Bronte McLaren (Class of 2012) was awarded with The Standard’s 2016 Journalism Scholarship in August during her final year of study. The scholarship is fantastic recognition for Bronte, who has just majored in both Journalism and Public Relations. All the best Bronte!

Past staff members Dr Ron Sproston, and Mem Taberner launched a children’s book, Peter the Littlest Penguin at Flagstaff Hill in September. With words by Ron and illustrations by Mem the book tells the tale of Warrnambool’s penguin colony and the Maremma dogs who protect them.
Inspiring Alumni, Shane Howard (Class of 1972) was recognised in this year’s Australia Day Honours when he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to: the performing arts as a singer, songwriter and guitarist, to the recording industry, and to Indigenous musicians. Congratulations to Shane on this honour.
A fellow companion of the Order of Australia and Inspiring Alumni David Atkinson OAM (Class of 1957) who was recognised by Warrnambool City Council as Warrnambool’s 2016 Citizen of the Year. David was also honoured late last year with a Life Governorship of Lyndoch Living following his 20 plus years of service on the Lyndoch Board.
At the most recent Evening of Inspiration (where we inducted the group of Inspiring Alumni who feature in this edition of the Emmanuel College Connection) a fortunate coincidence was a major retrospective exhibition of the art of fellow Inspiring Alumni, Kathryn Ryan on display at the Gallery at the same time entitled: A Quiet Place.
Roma Britnell (Class of 1984) became the Member for South West Coast in November 2015.
Marcia Howard (Class of 1978 and past staff member) competed and won accolades on the national TV show The Voice. Fantastic performance Marcia.
