The F.L.Y. program, 8 to 10 and Middle School Curriculum Handbook
Beyond Year 7, students move into the program that we call the FLY program, which stands for Flexible Learning Years. It is flexible because it is a ‘vertical’ curriculum, meaning that students are able to work at levels appropriate to their ability rather than the traditional approach of students being locked into units bound by their Year Level or age. No student at Emmanuel College is ‘held back’ by rules such as these.
Students who demonstrate a flair for a particular area of study have the freedom to undertake units at higher levels. There are also additional programs for those students requiring extension or enrichment challenges and initiatives, such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program.
Alternatively, there is the opportunity to take units that allow extra time for consolidation at a less advanced level. Programs such as corrective reading and bridging Maths cater for the students who need special assistance in these areas.
Many schools state that they cater for the individual needs of students, but at Emmanuel College we take pride in being able to demonstrate that we actually do cater for individual needs and have done so for a long time. We believe that all can achieve.
Are you ready to F.L.Y? Curriculum – Years 8 to 10
We also believe that all students are gifted. Students with particular talents can be fast tracked but we believe that it is important that they stay within their social infrastructure and are not isolated from other students.
